Writer's Block: Family Is…
[Error: unknown template qotd]
Family means always having to say you're sorry, even when it wasn't your fault. Family means crying in the middle of the night and loading up on St. John's Wart. Family means Law&Order marathons and debating Star Trek at the dinner table. Family means hiding in your room and refusing to come out. Family means dancing in public and not caring when strangers stare. Family means always being ready to go to the movies, even if you're not interested in whatever is playing. Family means getting lost at midnight, trying to find the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Family means not thinking about eight years ago, or eight months ago, or that thing that happened eight days ago. Family means trying and trying and trying and always feeling like a failure. Family means not thinking about the past as much as possible. Family means that there's always chocolate above the fireplace. Family means gritting your teeth through Thanksgiving and sitting through church at Christmas. Family means dogs and walks and hot Georgia heat.
Family means learning how to hide part of yourself early on. Family means moving and moving and always being the new kid. Family means not trusting anyone.
Family means Jane Austin and Amy Tan and Robin McKinley in spades. Family means stealing each other's books. Family means always stopping to buy a paperback. Family means peanut butter cookies with dark chocolate chips and Practical Magic on rainy days. Family means watching what you eat. Family means never look back.
Family is a contrition in terms, because there is no one else so totally capable of complete alienation.
