Great fic whether it's fandom based or published should make you think. Well, I do occasionally like a great read that lets me forget the world for awhile, but the really profound stuff should make you think and hopefully do it without forcing you to. It should just be part of the read.
For me, snippets lead to bigger things. Just like looking at the prompt meme or the doing drabble fests. Like I KNOW that even though I could just write that Reaper!Bones scene it would end up being a larger series or an epic. Which would make it an AU of my AU series. If you do enough AUs of an AU does it eventually go back to the canon? ;)
