Okay, I've started a sequel for this (*gulp*) where I have a better explanation planned out, but it goes like this: John basically exploded with protective magic. So anyone in the building with truly murderous thoughts was wiped out by it, including the vampire. Moriarty wanted to burn the heart out of Sherlock, but John burned the evil out of Moriarty. It just, you know, killed him. :D I think that makes sense?
