Fic snippet:The Looking Glass, Reaper!Bones

Title: The Looking Glass
Author: [livejournal.com profile] snowdarkred
Words: 333 about
Pairing/Rating/Warnings: Kirk/McCoy (duh, do I write anything else?), PG, a swear word, general depressing thoughts.
Author's Note: Hi, everyone! I wrote YET ANOTHER Reaper!Bones snippet. This one feels a little different from the others. (Note: The others could probably be taken as a series or whatever, but they weren't written to be that. This one is not in the 'same universe' as the others.) Also, I am actually working on a full length Reaper!Bones fic, but it's got nothing to do with this or the previous snippets.

The Looking Glass

He stared in the mirror watching his own hazel eyes stare back at him. The thoughts kept spinning in his head, an instant replay of all things he had done wrong, done right, missed completely. If only he'd been faster, been strong, been who he used to be.

His body would never feel that same strength again or experience those same senses. He'd given it all up without a second thought, leaping at the idea of a reversal of the C-24's curse. He wanted to be normal again, but he hadn't bargained on what might happen. So while he could no longer bench-press six hundred pounds with unnatural ease, or race a cheetah and win without breaking a sweat, he was still alive.

He was no longer John “Reaper” Grimm, and when Jim was in his bed, wrapped up in his arms and safe, he didn't regret his decision. If he had remained as he was, he's life might never have taken the path it had, and he might never had met Jim. He almost couldn't imagine a universe where he and Jim never met, never shared drinks and a bed. So, no, at those moments, he didn't regret taking the “cure” that stripped him of everything but immortality.

But when the shit hit the fan and he was trapped within human parameters, he hated himself for giving it up. Because if he was just a bit faster or stronger or better, he would have been able to do something more. He could have saved that redshirt or this scientist. He could have save his Jim from his attackers. He could have reacted as John “Reaper” Grimm would have, with fists and guns and blood. But he shed his gift as soon as the opportunity presented itself, and not he was stuck within human parameters.

He looked at the hazel eyes in the mirror, and he wasn't sure who he wanted to be staring back at him.

Reaper or Bones?

Oh yes! I had wondered this thought myself when I read your previous snippets. I thought, "yes! a lifetime where they age together!" Which was VERY Rose/10.5 Dr.Who awww angsty for me. and then I thought, "but how can he be so quick to give it up? There is so much more he can do, what a help he can be!" So yay introspective angst!! Because it works so well, as much as John/Bones was indestructible and able to be faster/stronger/safer my personal canon has a lot of Jim not letting Bones do that anyway. Because Jim throws himself into danger. Indestructible best friend or not. I like a more even playing field (it allows for even more angst!) ;)
