Author's Note: Soon I will get reputation for writing crossovers with Bones. This fic contains [deep breath] Lord of the Rings, Hercules, Xena, Pathfinder, The Truth About Demons, and a double dose of Reaper!Bones. (I'm about a fourth of the way done with 003 of Reality Check, btw.) I don't know if I like how this turned out, but you people seem to like my random fic snippets, so here you go.
Lives
In the very beginning, he was nothing but light; they were nothing but light and silence and order. The universe was new, and nothing had boundaries, nothing had rules, everything had its place. Chaos arose, because chaos has a place too. But the light couldn't exist in chaos; the universe's order could not thrive with the noise of its roar, its endless quest to destroy and build anew and destroy again. So the light, the beings that thought of themselves as nothing and everything, chose a sacrifice for the chaos to take. One for the sake of many; one for the sake of them all.
It was only logical.
So he was cast out into the chaos, to struggle for the roaring storm's amusement, fear, and delight. He was doomed to walk the worlds of the universe in a mortal's body, again and again, until the chaos was satisfied and receded.
----
He has a strange mother and lives in a strange land. He is strange. It is all very confusing and there is a lot of leather. He's almost glad when it's over, when his existence ends, because no one should be forced to see their mother wear lingerie everyday.
----
He is member of a great house. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. The world seems like a vast place, with darkness clawing at the edges. There is death, and blood, and hate. There is his beautiful sister and horses. There is his people and his land. There is emptiness in his heart as he cuts down his enemies in battle.
He feels restless his whole life, even as the battles roar and the darkness teases at the corners of his eyes. He feels the need to run and run, to jump on a horse and never touch the ground again.
He marries and raises a son and never forgets the feel of wind in his hair, even as his land prospers under his rein.
----
He is rich and powerful and knows it. The pirates will not harm him, the woman who leads them will not win, he will not fall. He can and does match her at every turn and he delights in it, for here is a challenge. Here is the possibility of death and glory, all wrapped up in a covering of leather and metal. He defies the odds and proves that nothing can stop him.
He leads his men into battle after battle, but it is never enough, for there is something that drives him, something that makes him look across the land and see what could be. Each future, a painting in his head, urging him on, hinting at the right thing to do.
He does everything, and it is not his own actions that cause his downfall, but the betrayal from someone he trusted. His last words are filled with bitterness and despair at his ending opportunities.
----
He sails across the sea, but the sea fights them. He survives the battle his brethren could not win, the battle that ended their lives. He is taken in by a woman who speaks strangely, and he survives, even when the dreams make him wish he was dead.
His fallen brethern's brethren destroys everything, kills everyone of this small place that he has found. There is blood on the ground and he cannot take understand it. He knows that this is the brethern way, to kill and maim and fight, but now, as the blood crusts into pools of black, he finds that he cannot accept it.
He sets out for revenge, others joining him along the way, and together they rain down vengeance upon the brethren, using their wits and intuition to bring them down.
He lives the rest of his life watching, waiting for the interloping brethren to return once more for bloodshed.
----
He looks at the past for a living, his curiosity driving him to uncover the mysteries of the world. The thrill of finding a clue that could unlock a great secret or reveal a hidden treasure is addicting. He fights against the cults that spring up wherever humanity is, because they spread darkness, and he is determined to stop their taint. He receives a video tape full of nonsensical chanting and death threats, and brushes them aside, refusing to giving in to the darkness of human ignorance.
What follows is a nightmare and he can't wait for it to be over. Except its not, there are monsters, demons, following him and everything gets fucked up.
He survives. Barely. But the world no longer makes sense; the shadows no longer feel safe.
----
He's a soldier. He goes where they tell him; he does what they tell him. Darkness is a myth; evil is an everyday act. They get an assignment, and his leader tells him to sit it out. But he's a soldier, and soldiers go where they are told.
They pass through a portal, a mysterious structure left behind by mysterious creators. His sister, his other half, is on the other side. They are there to fight the monsters, but the monsters aren't what they thought they were. His leader, the man he'd followed to hell, turns out to be the worst monster at all.
His sister doesn't want him to leave her, doesn't want to be alone. She saves him; she dooms him. He waits for the day he will finally die.
It never comes.
----
He wanders the world for decades, peering into the recesses of humanity's soul. He walks the earth, a lost soul, forever cursed to live and see and feel. He creates identities for himself, lives other people's lives. He goes to school, again and again. He becomes a lawyer, a scientist, teacher. A doctor.
He doesn't think much of humanity and their quest for the stars. He sees a sign advertising adventure and new discoveries, knowledge and power. He signs up, thinking that it'll be just another stop along the way, another episode in his stretching existence.
He meets Jim Kirk on shuttle.
He stops wandering.
-----
The chaos watched and waited as the fallen light learned through the eons. Lives cycled past, and the sacrifice expanded, learned, loved, and lost. They watched as he found love and held onto it with both hands.
And the chaos laughed at the stupidity of the light to give him away.
