Title: A Pause in a War Torn Era
Author: [livejournal.com profile] snowdarkred
Summery: Drabbleish/oneshot. Duo’s brief muses during a break between the fighting. The sun had fled from the sky, leaving the darkness to its own devices.
Rating/Warnings:  K+, because of figurative blood.
Disclaimer: I don’t own Gundam Wing. I wish I did…but I don’t.
Words: 380 words
Note: This story/drabble-ish came about after a lazy day watching the news and eating ramen. That therefore explains why this is such a weird-ass story. I kind of like it though. I hope you do too. A Pause in a War Torn Era

The day ended with a sigh. In the quiet moments, the rare pauses, it felt like the Earth, a strange creature that he had never before encountered, whimpered at the silence. The Earth, the Mother, the enemy, was too used to being rocked with explosions, too used to the rush of blood that followed. She wanted war, but she feared it.

The day ended with a sigh.

Duo sat up. There were clouds on the horizon. He wondered if he could push his gundam through them, if they would resist his intrusion. If they would turn on him like an enemy combatant. Duo decided that he had been fighting too long. He could barely discern their edges. The sun had fled from the sky, leaving the darkness to its own devices.

Earth. It was a land of fairy-tales to the colony-born. Before his entry into the war, he had only glimpsed it a few times on the news. The Old Home had always looked picturesque, an orb of blue and white suspended in the deep black of space. Duo had made up stories about it, impossible stories that stretched as far as he could make them. But always the stories would snap, like rubber bands pulled too tight. Duo would be left alone once again, cold and hungry on the streets of L2.

Duo reveled in these pauses. He savored them, trying drag out each second into a minute, an hour, an eternity. He hated what he did, but it had to be done. It was better that his enemies die by his merciful hand than by someone else’s. He told himself this, but he never believed it. He was not merciful. He was vengeful, a vengeful angel from hell. He knew what people secretly called him. He had earned it.

The clouds had vanished over the horizon. The sun’s last light was swallowed at last. The Earth lay silent under the stars. Duo imagined that he could hear her whimper under the strain of not having any blood to sully her waters. He hoped that she would suffer without for a long time.

A distant explosion thundered. Unnatural light sparked at the horizon. Duo sprang to his feet and sprinted towards his gundam. The Earth would taste blood tonight.
