Fic snippet: Reaper!Bones
Title: Waking Up
Author: snowdarkred
Rating/Warnings: G, none
Aithor's Note: Doom xover. This is just a tiny bite-sized fic to satisfy my muse, since I'm too busy with my other xover to do the Reaper!Bones concept justice. So I wrote an itty-bitty one instead.
Waking Up
Reaper woke up everyday in Leonard McCoy's bed.
No, wait, that wasn't right.
John Grimm woke up every morning in Leonard McCoy's bed.
That wasn't right either.
Leonard McCoy woke up every sunrise in Leonard McCoy's bed.
That wasn't it....
Bones woke up in Leonard McCoy's bed everyday at daybreak.
There.
He ignored the part of him that whispered that something was still off.

John/Bones has it wrong because he's not waking up in Jim's bed.no subject
Reaper is ruthless and instinctive, John is distant and still dealing with his guilt and grief over his parents' deaths. McCoy is thoughtful and confident, but he carries around grief as well and he has a tendency to bottle it up and then lash out when it becomes to much.
And Bones? Bones has Jim to balance him and make him feel whole again. And when he's not there, he can't help but feel the same disconnected drifting that he's experienced over the years come back and haunt him. Jim casts so much light that it drives Bones' shadows away.
Wow, I'm going to go write that down and turn it into another snippet. XD

*glares at the plot tribble that's creeping my way* No! No Reaper!fics until I'm done with the current story!
LOL The thing about Jim's bed was one of the first things I thought when I finished reading. "But he's supposed to be in Jim's bed..." Or the other way around, though I think the Captain's quarters are bigger.

I have way too much time on my hands.....

That's one of the things I liked about it. His life is still disjointed and it's not perfect, which probably would've been easier to write. Anyway, if Bones' life wasn't a little bitter (no matter what version he is) would he be as much fun to play with?
I do the same thing with my characters at work. When I'm doing some boring task that doesn't require brain power, I start analyzing my characters and thinking up ways to ruin their lives. ;)

It's a pet peeve of mine when people don't want to read something just a little difficult in some way, be it intellectually or emotionally.
I've had fics like that. Ones that people didn't like because they were emotionally different than what was expected. I usually figure them as something to help myself grow and write the next tribble that bites.

I think that a good fic touches you in some way (or any story). You may not be comfortable, but it doesn't have to be. I read, and reread, stories that I may not like, but they have a message or a meaning that I can't let go. It's like that with the Dollhouse AU someone did. It makes me uncomfortable, but in a way a can't let go. (And it's an amazing fic, on that is pointed and subtle at the same time. It makes a person THINK.)
